NorthApprenticeshipBike Repair and SafetyTeens develop hands-on mechanic skills as they build their own bicycles, organize their own community events, and enjoy weekly field trips exploring Chicago by bike! Teens that successfully complete the program are then eligible for Summer employment with the Chicago Park District or as mechanics at bike shops. Returning Apprentices are given additional opportunities to develop skills in program operations and instruction, material reuse and recycling, cargo bikes and trailers, and welding and fabrication.Spring 2016ActiveTechIndustrial TechnologyMotor Vehicles (Automotive Repair)Program benefits include: experience working in a professional bicycle workshop, professional development that includes financial counseling and resume writing, health and wellness education, public presentation experience, map reading and urban navigation, safe cycling instruction, greater transportation options, and freedom of travel throughout Chicago. Direct benefits to the participants include opportunities and eligibility for employment with the Chicago Park District for Summer jobs as Jr. Bicycling Ambassadors and Jr. Camp Counselors, Assistant Instructors for Elementary School bike programs, and entry level bike builders and mechanics at area bike shops.West Town Bikes offers several Service Learning Project opportunities. These include involvement in the following community events: Three Kings Day Parade, Move For Life, Humboldt Park Earth Day Cleanup, Bike the Drive, the People's Puerto Rican Parade, Chicago Tour de Fat, the Division Street Classic Car and Bike Show, Fiesta Boricua, and Haunted Fiesta Boricua. Apprentices involved in the community events will give presentations on the benefits of bicycling as well as lead bicycle related activities such as bike rides and games. Apprentices will also have the opportunity to assist in the instruction of younger peers through West Town Bikes programs that include Elementary School programs and our drop in programs, Bike Club and Girls Bike Club.CommunityOrganizationLebster L.
